Donna Clair

Southwest Contemporary Artist

(15″x30″ Original Oil on Canvas)

About a week ago I posted a photo of the underpainting of this work — This post shows you the second phase of this process — laying in the darkest darks — the glazes. Glazes are transparent or semi-transparent colors — the light is still refracted through these colors from the underpainting, giving the paint “life”. Instead of black, two of my favorite mixtures are Prussian Blue and Burnt Sienna and sometimes I add Alizarin Crimson to this mix. Another of my favorite “warm” dark color mixtures is Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber. Coming soon: the middle tones and final highlights.
